General Marmaduke left a detachment under a Captain Gordon to act as pickets at the confederates entrenchments on the Missouri side to keep the Federals thinking his troops were still in position. After General Marmaduke had moved all his troops and artillery across the river, the floating bridge was cut loose around daybreak.
