Union Advance at Gravel Hill

This view shows the Crowley Ridge Military Road about a mile from the town of Four-Mile, most of the road from Four Mile to here is now Farmer's fields, but the road to the river is accessable.

The Union troops advanced through the clearing and then moved up the incline advancing on the Confederate positions. The Confederates opened on the advancing Union troops with canister. This heavy barrage drove the Union back down the hill. General McNeil continued sending in more troops which made more suicidal attacks but were driven back in turn. The Union brigades took close to 400 casualties.
