Four-Mile from Northwest

Four-Mile was located on the road at the top of the hill. The Union troops attacked from the left of the Picture down the Crowley Ridge Military Road (which followed the ridge line in this picture) and the Confederates defended on the right side of the road---The Union 1st Iowa Cavalry column under Major Joseph Caldwell moved in at daylight and were met by the Confederates of Carter's Brigade which were supported by Pratt's Battery at the Four-Mile defensive line. The Union brought in the 3rd Mo. Volunteer cavalry and Lt. Lawrence Jacoby's battery to assist the 1st Iowa and the fighting continued until it eventually became an artillery duel.
