Captain Given Campbell, C.S.A. (1835/1906) The son of James and Mary Given Campbell, Given Campbell was born on December 1, 1835. After his education at Salem, Kentucky, and at the University of Virginia law School, Campbell moved to St. Louis to study law under Charles Drake. In February 1861 Campbell joined the Missouri Volunteer Militia and as captain led Company G of the 2d Regiment (Bowen’s Regiment) in General Frost’s command. He was among those captured on May 10 1861, when General Lyon seized the militia at Camp Jackson. After his release, Campbell joined the 2d Kentucky Cavalry (Morgan’s) and then the 9th Kentucky Cavalry. As the Confederacy collapsed after the surrender of Lee’s army at Appomattox, Captain Campbell commanded a ten-man escort for President Davis as he fled south, Davis and his escort were captured at Irwinsville, Georgia, on May 10, 1865, four years to the day after Campbell’s capture at Camp Jackson. After the war Campbell returned to St. Louis but then moved to New Orleans to avoid the radicals in Missouri. He returned to St. Louis in 1873 to practice law and in 1878 served on the city council. Campbell died in St. Louis on November 20, 1906. (Block 112, Lot 56) |
