Sterling Price Monument Details

Major General Sterling Price, C.S.A., (1809-1867), Congressman, Missouri Governor--Known as "Old Pap" by his men, Sterling Price was before the war, the Governor of Missouri, a U.S. Congressman and the commander of the Missouri State Militia during the Civil War. He gained Military experience in the Mexican War and was appointed a brigadier general for his services. In May of 1861, he was appointed a major general in the Missouri State Guard. General Price tried to keep the peace in Missouri, but when General Lyon captured the Militia at Camp Jackson, he and Claiborne Fox Jackson retreated with his army to southwest Missouri. In August 1861, he and General Ben McCulloch defeated General Lyon at the Battle of Wilson’s Creek. After the battle he moved north to capture Lexington, Mo., but was forced to retreat back to northwest Arkansas. In March 1862 he fought at the battle of Pea Ridge but this was a Union victory and he was again forced to retreat. He was promoted to major general of the Confederate Provisional Army on March 6th, 1862, the day before the battle of Pea Ridge. In October 1862, he again led troops at the unsuccessful battles of Iuka and Corinth. In 1863 he was involved in the battle of Helena, Arkansas and in September and October 1864, he commanded in the invasion of Missouri and won at Pilot Knob with over 1,000 casualties in his army. He then moved west and his army was defeated at the Battle of Westport near Kansas City.     (Block 96, Lot 1734)
